“Take, eat; this is my body.” Jesus places the bread in relation to Himself while the shadow of His arrest and death is already over the meal.
My Blood of the Covenant.
The cup is not explained merely as a memorial of friendship. Jesus connects His blood with covenant language familiar from Israel’s Scriptures and gives His death a God-centered saving meaning.
Poured Out for Many.
His death is presented as being for others. Jesus is not simply describing what enemies will do to Him; He speaks of His life being given with purpose.
For the Forgiveness of Sins.
These words must remain central. Whatever else the cross reveals—human cruelty, injustice, suffering, love—Jesus explicitly connects His death with forgiveness.
I Will Not Drink Again Until.
Jesus ends by pointing toward the Father’s kingdom. The words over the meal therefore do not leave Him trapped in death. He speaks with confidence about the future beyond what is about to happen.
Tomorrow, consider what these words reveal about Jesus’ mission and authority at the center of the cross.
